My mind is so overloaded with thoughts and emotions. My list of things to do keeps getting longer. I must need a vacation, right? Problem is that I’ve had some time off and it hasn’t solved my problem. Today, I’ve made dumb errors. One is that I left the keys in the ignition of my work pickup overnight. And more than that, the windows were down and some expensive equipment was inside. This afternoon I printed out some address labels but had misspelled “Clayton”. Not much after that, I made some copies of a document and thought it didn’t appear to be right. When I got to the counter to explain things to the landowner, I had blank copies. Yeah, I just need to stop and think a bit.

So, we’re in our new office building at work. Its nice – has good and bad about it. I like being in a new building with some decent furniture and constant temperature (even if I am a bit cold). But its so open and sound carries too well. We car hear everything going on near us. I don’t want to hear everyone else’s conversations and I don’t want them to hear mine :)

We start our first week of AWANA on Wednesday night. Please think of us and we “lead” the JV group in our home another year. I’m sure it will be a challenge for all of us to get used to. In the mean time, off to work I go to finish cleaning the JV room (aka basement).

HAPPY BIRTHDAY DAD!

HEAVEN or HELL
A powerful senator dies after a prolonged illness. His soul arrives in heaven and is met by St. Peter at the entrance.

"Welcome to Heaven," says St. Peter. "Before you settle in, it seems there is a problem. We seldom see a high official around these parts, you see, so we're not sure what to do with you."

"No problem, just let me in," says the guy. "Well, I'd like to but I have orders from higher up. What we'll do is have you spend one day in Hell and one in Heaven. Then you can choose where tospend eternity."

"Really, I've made up my mind. I want to be in heaven," says the senator.

"I'm sorry but we have our rules."

And with that, St. Peter escorts him to the elevator and he goes down, down, down to Hell. The doors open and he finds himself in the middle of a green golf course. In the distance is a club and standing in front of it are all his friends and other politicians who had worked with him, everyone is very happy and in evening attire. They run to greet him, hug him, and reminisce about the good times they had while getting rich at the expense of the people. They play a friendly game of golf and then dine on lobster and caviar.

Also present is the Devil, who really is a very friendly guy who has a good time dancing and telling jokes. They are having such a good time that before he realizes it, it is time to go. Everyone gives him a big hug and waves while the elevator rises.

The elevator goes up, up, up and the door reopens on Heaven where St. Peter is waiting for him. "Now it's time to visit Heaven."

So 24 hours pass with the head of state joining a group of contented souls moving from cloud to cloud, playing the harp and singing. They have a good time and, before he realizes it, the 24 hours have gone by and St. Peter returns.

"Well then, you've spent a day in Hell and another in Heaven. Now choose your eternity."

He reflects for a minute, then the senator answers, "Well, I would never have said it, I mean Heaven has been delightful, but I think I would be better off in Hell."

So St. Peter escorts him to the elevator and he goes down, down, down to Hell.

Now the doors of the elevator open and he is in the middle of a barren land covered with waste and garbage. He sees all his friends, dressed in rags, picking up the trash and putting it in black bags. The Devil comes over to him and lays his arm on his neck. "I don'tunderstand, "stammers the senator. "Yesterday I was here and there was a golf course and club and we ate lobster and caviar and danced and had a great time. Now all there is, a wasteland full of garbage and my friends look miserable.

The Devil looks at him, smiles and says, "Yesterday we were campaigning..Today you voted for us!"
The Two Wolves
An elder Cherokee Native American was teaching his grandchildren about life. He said to them, "A fight is going on inside me... it is a terrible fight and it is between two wolves. " One wolf represents fear, anger, envy, sorrow, regret, greed, arrogance, self -pity, guilt, resentment, inferiority, lies, false pride, superiority, and ego. " The other stands for joy, peace, love, hope, sharing, serenity, humility, kindness , benevolence, friendship, empathy, generosity, truth, compassion, and faith. " This same fight is going on inside you, and inside every other person, too." The children thought about it for a minute and then one child asked "Which wolf will win, grandfather?" The old Cherokee simply replied... "The one you feed."

I love our older generation. They have so much to offer us, so much to teach. They’re often times a living history and what fun they can be when they make themselves an open book. Grandparents are especially wonderful. They tie us to our family heritage, they love us and often times spoil us. Often times as they age, they vocalize their opinions a little more and though it’s out of love, the tact isn’t there. Its something we experience most visits to Ryan’s grandparents. They are wonderful people and we absolutely love to visit them except for one thing – the tact issue. The time we get to spend with them, sharing of family history, the fresh baked pie, the goodies they send home with us are often spoiled before we ever leave.
This past week we spent three nights with G&G B. They opened their home so that we could putt around. We got in late Thursday night and went to bed. Friday we spent the day at the fair and then had supper with some friends in Des Moines. Saturday morning we had a little more time in Prairie City. It was that morning that the hurtful words came pouring out. This also happened last time we were down. At that time, Grandpa was in the hospital and I confronted Grandma about the issue. I think I was clear in letting her know that it was inappropriate, hurtful and shouldn’t continue. Anyway, this time was Grandpa. Although he says things from a big and loving heart, it comes out wrong. I didn’t know it happened until later that afternoon and was quite upset that I wasn’t there to intercede. So Saturday we went on with our day and Ryan was adamant on not going back to PC until later that night. We came home and went to bed again. Sunday morning I was on guard and pretty much waiting for something to be said. I really tried to be so irritated about it but wasn’t succeeding. We worshipped at church – the message was wonderful and then went back for lunch. It was quite fun, Grandma B and I walked around the garden as she showed me the different things she had planted. But still, I was waiting to defend my Ryan. It’s so interesting that they make comments about Ryan’s weight but in the next sentence tell him to eat more pancakes and eat the rest of the bacon. Anyway, we sat down for lunch and they questioned why Ryan wasn’t eating more. I think I was so frustrated at this point that I just wanted to address this issue before anything more hurtful was said. But I didn’t. And so, Ryan and I eventually left to drive back home. Unfortunately, when people say hurtful things and his self esteem drops even more, I’m the one who gets to deal with it and TRY to build it back up.
So, next time I begin to open my mouth (even in a loving way), I hope that I can think back to these sorts of incidences. And when I wonder why Ryan takes everything I say as negative, I hope that God reminds me to love him even more and speak words that build and encourage. I think that I speak the truth in love and it doesn’t mean it’s accepted as such. So, I hope I choose my words very carefully.

This is my newest photo. Mom took it when we were shopping for wedding flowers in February of 2003. I love it because it wasn't staged. Umm, I like Ryan! Posted by Hello
Yay, its Friday - sorta!
Its after noon on Thursday but it so feels like Friday to me. I'll be heading home shortly to finish up my beerock's that I started making last night. Check out the recipe online - I use hamburger meat instead of roast. I can just taste them! Then when Ryan comes home, we'll head down to Prairie City. Tomorrow will be a full day of the 150th Iowa State Fair. It will be fun to see all the exhibits, eat good food and hang out with Ryan. I'm eager to see the Butter Cow. Every year a lady makes cow sculpture out of butter. I remember seeing it my first summer in Iowa. Saturday we plan to hang out with some local friends - a highschool buddy of Ryan's who just moved back and my friend, Mike Crouse, who was in Iraq/Afghanistan for a year and a half and got back recently. Sunday we'll do the family thing - have lunch with Ryan's grandparents after church. So, it should be a nice but busy weekend. Hope my feet can handle all the walking, I'm sure they'll be sore. May you enjoy your Friday - whenever it is!

13 August 2004

Okay, so I seriously haven't written back to people. I feel like I'm always saying that but seriously its crazier than usual here. Lots going on at work - my desk keeps piling up. Been trying to spend my summer hours outside and hanging out with those that I need to get to know better. Also had a good friend in a car accident last week where he walked away and his best friend died. That's been difficult around here but praise God that He's in control. Josh the day before had been witnessing to a new employee and told him "...if I die tomorrow, I know I'll go to heaven..." And the next day he died. What a witness to that guy! So, trying to keep my head out of water. I've slept in my bed but haven't been home for 2 weeks basically. Its wild. Then I'm gone at meetings lots which makes work even more hectic. I'm loving it though. Life is so good. I've really been challenged lately about my personal walk. Wanted Ryan to lead me so I completely used his lack of leadership as an excuse. Sure, I was reading the Word most everyday with Ryan and doing some study but I wasn't fellowshipping with teh Lord like I needed. So, my week has been started on teh right foot every morning and its so nice, so nice! I lay in bed awake and pray that I'll have the prompting to get up and read - duh, that is the prompting!!!! I've been at it this week - stretching out my sore muscles and having quiet time. Oh, I've missed that. So, pray with me that I keep my lazy butt working at it - God is so deserving and I'm such a slacker!

CAMPING
Finally the time came when we headed off on our camping adventure. Both of us enjoy camping and have talked about it numerous times – we even registered for camping items for the wedding. But we just never actually camped together until last weekend.

It was Ryan, me, mom, Ralph and the Brubakers (Kathy, Erin & Matt). Oh and lets not forget the dogs: DJ (our dalmation), Zachery (mom’s teacup poodle) and Lucky (the Brubaker’s dalmation). Thursday I bought lots of food and did some minor preparations. Friday, Ryan came home at noon and began packing. I showed up about 130 and helped out. We had the back of our truck full of food, fishing equipment, firewood, etc. My folks met us at our house, we all headed to Brubakers, stopped for ice and were on our way. We camped up at Gouldsburg which is only a half hour from our house. The park consists of 64 acres at the confluence of the Little Turkey River and Crane Creek. The topography is rolling to hilly with desirable picnicking and a modern camping facility. It was so nice not having to drive hours and hours to get some where. The campground was pretty, set along side the Little Turkey River on one side and next to a soybean field on the other side. It seemed almost weird to me since I work in that type of environment and I live in the country. I could’ve camped at my own house for that matter except I wouldn’t have had all the exciting things that I’m about to share with you :)

There was a “faucet” to get water, only around here, they aren’t faucets. It seems kinda antique-ish to me, but they’re old pump handles. Like at our house, instead of turning the faucet nozzle, you pull up the old handle for water. Gouldsburg had an actual old hand pump where you had to pump it to get water to flow. It was pretty neat and my shoulders and arms really got a good work out. We camped just 2 spaces away from that. At the space in between, a family came in with 3 kids, a kayak and canoe. Their youngest, who was 3, really liked our dalmation and everytime we walked by, the little boy had to run up and pet DJ. Cute little kid. Friday night we fixed hamburgers, grilled some veggies Ralph-style, along with spinach dip for supper. Just after we sat down for our meal, the little boy next to us was out by the truck & trailer and he started crying. Of course everyone jumps up to go help him. His parents, one other camper who was getting water and I all went towards to boy. They got there first and the mom just started freaking out big time. She was screaming that the little boy got it stuck in his eye and just went nuts. The other guy grabbed the boy and saw that he got a hook from the fishing pole under his eyelid. The guy yelled to have someone go back to his campground for needle nose pliers so I hurried back and got mine out of my tackle box. As I brought him the pliers, it looked nasty. I was sure it poked through the eyelid but you couldn’t really tell with the tears and blood. Anway, the guy had to slap the moms hand away because she was trying to tear it out. The sisters (13 and 11) were also freaking out now because of their parents’ reactions. So, I walked off with the little girls. They guy ended up getting the hook out and they headed for the hospital. The family came back later and stopped to share with us the outcome. That little boy had walked along the side of the truck towards the trailer. The pole was in the bed of the truck with the end hanging down while the Dad went to get a different fly for it. It hung at perfect heighth for the little boy to walk past and it caught right under his eyelid. No scratches, no punctures, no nothing. The emergency room gave him antibiotics and sent him home. What grace! The little boy just said that the fishing pole bit him. That was more than enough drama for the weekend.

The rest of the weekend was so relaxing and peaceful. Ryan and I fished for a while Friday afternoon and I was having a great time walking through the stream and piddling around. Brubakers had to leave for a bit to pick up Erin from summer camp and we stayed behind and played dominoes and laid on a blanket on the ground. Sunday we all headed back to town to clean up and go to church. After church we went back to Gouldsburg to eat lunch, play some more dominoes and pack up. It was such a nice camping experience. Chit chatting, sitting by the campfire, s’mores, dominoes and lovely weather. Hmm, I need me another weekend like that!

09 August 2004

Wow, it truly does seem like time is flying. I’ve claimed that I was crazy busy in college and things have since slowed down. But more recently, I’m beginning to wonder if that continues to be true. Another whirlwind week has gone by and it doesn’t seem to be slowing down as of yet.
Last Tuesday was a full day at work with lots of things to accomplish. I began my day with a phone call to the chiropractor to have him adjust my jaw back into place. The receptionist, Peggy, scheduled me for 4:20. Not exactly what I was looking for but at least she could get me in. So, anyway, I work a full day with my jaw out of place which causes a nasty headache which then causes my eyes to be blurry. But hey, that’s life. I catch up with Dr. Ferguson who does his work and chit chats with me. So, I left the chiropractor office at 4:45pm for a 3 hour drive to Des Moines. The sky was darker than usual and rain was coming but I was sure that I’d make it during daylight hours. Thirty minutes down the road and listening to the radio, I hear of thunderstorms and tornado watches. I called Ryan and he agreed to keep me updated as the news came on the TV. A few minutes later mom called to tell me about it. She started naming the counties that I would be traveling through and they all had severe T-storms and tornado watches. I couldn’t even take the long route to get away from the storms. Since I was on my way, I decided that if it was still really bad in Waterloo (80 miles from my office) that I would consider staying the night there. I continued down the road and the sky darkened and quickly turned black. It was now raining pretty hard and the wind was blowing and it looked as if it was the middle of the night. Just before I got into Waterloo, I could no longer see the road in front of me because of the rain. Stopping on the highway is not a good idea so I continued to travel at a slow speed until I could stop. As I came to the I-380 interchange, I saw a line of cars that stopped. So, I pulled into the middle of the pack. Even though it continued to pour down, people were leaving. Knowing that the exit for Waterloo was just a ¼ mile up and the mall is right down the road from that, I got back on the road. Got into town, headed to the mall to assure that I was in a “safe place” should a tornado come and “waited” for the storm to pass. While I waited, I went on a mini shopping spree to Victoria’s Secret, Old Navy and a few other places. I got back on the road about an hour later after the brunt of the storm had passed.
I was scheduled for an 8am meeting in Des Moines the next morning and planned on staying with Ryan’s grandparents about a half hour east of DM. I went the Des Moines route with plans to have supper with some friends before staying the night in Prairie City. Here it was 7:15pm and I was still 2 hours from DM. Plans for supper were out the window by now, I just need to get to PC and go to sleep. Since I was heading towards DM instead of PC, I had to take an unfamiliar route to skip DM and get to PC. It had already been a long day, I still had a headache, the weather was bad, I didn’t get to see Mike and Naphtali and I didn’t know this road I had to take. Praise the Lord for just enough light for the road I’m on! Since I continued to drive through tornado watch and thunderstorm areas, the lightening portion of the storm was just amazing. Not only was it gorgeous to see off in the distance but the bolts of lightening lit up the sky almost continuously. The lightening provided just enough for me to see the road I was traveling. It was such a blessing. It really did calm my heart about driving on this unfamiliar road because I wasn’t totally in the “dark”. I arrived at G&G B’s about 9:15pm and visited a little while before heading off to bed.

Pharmacist
Okay, for my friends who don't get it... the pharmacist that the kid talked to ended up being the girl's dad. YEAH, that's why he said his prayers for so long!

Outies
I've been out of the office for several days. Spent some time in Des Moines for the State Civil Rights Advisory Committee (CRAC) and then some time at an Area District Conservationist meeting. Now, I'm back home but I've got lotsa stuff on my desk to deal with before I leave at noon today to go camping :)

First Time
A girl asks her boyfriend to come over Friday night and have dinner with her parents. Since this is such a big event, the girl announces to her boyfriend that after dinner, she would like to go out and make love for the first time.
Well, the boy is ecstatic, but he has never had sex before, so he takes a trip to the pharmacist to get some condoms. The pharmacist helps the boy for about an hour. He tells the boy everything there is to know about condoms and sex.
At the register, the pharmacist asks the boy how many condoms he'd like to buy, a 3-pack, 10-pack, or family pack. The boy insists on the family pack because he thinks he will be rather busy, it being his first time and all.
That night, the boy shows up at the girl's parent's house and meets his girlfriend at the door. "Oh, I'm so excited for you to meet my parents, come on in!" The boy goes inside and is taken to the dinner table where the girl's parents are seated. The boy quickly offers to say grace and bows his head.
A minute passes, and the boy is still deep in prayer, with his head down. 10 minutes pass, and still no movement from the boy.
Finally, after 20 minutes with his head down, the girlfriend leans over and whispers to the boyfriend, "I had no idea you were this religious."

wonderful weekend...
Oh how I love the weekends. Usually my Saturday involves cleaning up the house while Ryan works. But our maid (me) has been on vacation! Saturday morning Ryan headed to the office and I went outside and piddled around the flower beds. I plucked out lots of weeds that don't belong. Then I watered some of my potted plants and re-potted some others. After a quick shower, I headed for mom's house to play with Kaleb and Ryan. I took Kaleb to the Clermont Days Parade. Since Kaleb hadn't been to a parade before, he didn't even know what it was and definitely didn't grasp the whole candy thing. Thanks to the help of some college and HS kids from the area, he quickly learned. His to-die-for eyes got everyones attention and by time we left, he had two bags full of candy. Cody and Erin taught Kaleb that waving at people meant more candy and they were definitely correct. He had a blast and even tossed candy to the guy on the tractor that didn't have any to offer him :) Talk about a cute kid! He loved the clowns and tractors; we had a blast. After the parade, we went back to mom's for a bite to eat and a nap. The nap lasted about 5 minutes because he was so excited to go fishing instead. So, mom and Ryan joined us on our little fishing trip. We went to the pond at Gilbertson Park just outside town. Kaleb had fun watching his grammy cast out his line and then he liked reeling it back in. Needless to say we didn't bring home any fish but we had fun. Ryan went home and we dropped grammy off and headed back to Gilbertson. There we walked around the little "petting zoo" and through the informational building. That was fun too. I had a blast hanging out with him. Sunday morning mom and Ralph left to take the kids back home but it was great to have both of them here for a while. When I download my camera, I'll bring pictures.

Me and my honey - we are so cute! Posted by Hello

20 July 2004

Its only Tuesday. Wait a second, my glass is half full – PRAISE THE LORD, its no longer Monday :) Lots going on in my little pea brain! I have the weirdest dreams. I wonder how Megan is, how the Sonksen’s and Whitney’s friends are mourning her death. I wonder why I’m afraid to confront someone I love when they’re making harmful decisions. I’m thankful to have so many friends involved in ministry but sad to see the Zurbriggen’s leave here. It amazes how God created our bodies so intricately – that a deer in the middle of the road can cause us to instantly break out in a sweat. I appreciate my little rural town where people value families and fellowship. The list goes on and on about the random thoughts in my head.

I had these wonderful plans yesterday. Leave the office at noon, get a haircut, go home for a quick shower, prepare a picnic for supper, take my nephew fishing and then meet up with Ryan for the HS baseball game. Well, things didn’t run so smoothly. I didn’t have the guts to chop my hair, instead she took off 2 inches. Then I get home, showered and started making chicken salad sandwiches. I quickly realized that we didn’t have any mayo in the house. I grabbed a burrito for a quick bite to eat and sat down to watch some design show while I ate. A news interruption came on to tell of thunderstorm warning and a tornado watch (a watch means that storms are forming in a patter that can create a tornado but a tornado has yet to be spotted) in the county. I debated on the whole fishing thing but the sky wasn’t too dark. So, I packed my fishing gear (what little I have), the picnic, a hat for the baseball game and headed off to moms. Kaleb didn’t take a nap and therefore couldn’t go fishing. I ended up taking him to the store to buy a fishing license and mayo. The place I thought sold fishing licenses didn’t and so we went on to the grocery store. Meanwhile Kaleb, who didn’t care to go with me to the store, talked non-stop. We stopped at the Ciszewski’s for a few minutes for Kaleb to play with their 4 girls. Mom called my cell to say that a tornado had been spotted 40 miles North and there was damaging sized hail. It started raining so we jumped in the truck and headed to my house for the tricycle. It just didn’t seem dark enough to be a major issue. While on the road, Ryan calls to say that he can’t meet me for the baseball game. The office staff scheduled him for a 430 appt (way too late) 25 miles from the office. Ryan would have to meet me at the game. We got the tricycle and headed back for moms hoping the weather would stay favorable. It’s not like we need anymore big rains anyway – we’ve had plenty of those this year. I made a few phone calls to see if the baseball game was still planned. Nobody knew so I mixed my mayo in with the chicken and headed off for the game. Just 15 minutes down the road was a road block. All I could think was “great, I only know one way to Fayette and the road is closed”. So, I asked the police officer and found out that it was just routed around an accident. Okay, to recap: I didn’t chop my hair as much as I planned, I didn’t take Kaleb fishing as planned and I didn’t get to meet Ryan for the game. We get to Fayette about the same time but neither of us knew where the baseball stadium is. After a quick tour of the town, we found the field. Fayette is the only town in America that has a university but not a high school (question from Who wants to be a Millionaire). The game started early in hopes to beat the weather so we missed the top of the inning. Our town is super supportive and the stands were full so we stood and watched over the homerun fence. Not my idea of fun at all. But within a few minutes, some friends had joined us in the “cheap seats”. Ryan snacked on a few chips and I ate sunflower seeds but we never did have our picnic. Leann invited us to come over after the game for supper and to hear some friends share about going into ministry. We had a great time hanging out with them. It was 11pm when we left the Carlson’s and way too late for us old married people. Good times even though the day didn't go quite as planned.
Today is Ralph’s birthday so I’m headed to mom’s to celebrate with them. Mom is cooking up ribs and some other good stuff. Happy Birthday Poops!

UPDATE on Megan Babtista
This one was received Tuesday @1140am
Well, the praise comes first - Megan will be seen by a facial nerve specialist at Stanford on Monday! Yeah! God is good, all the time.

Next comes prayer - last night, the right side went paralyzed also, stopping her tear ducts, saliva, taste buds, and part of her hearing. She is having a really hard time choking down any food, and she can't close her lips or eyes anymore. It's really hard to understand her when she speaks - I have to be right in her face in order to "translate" what she's saying. This probably means that there is still bleeding and swelling going on in her skull - she sees a neurologist today at 1 PM. Whew - she really isn't out of the woods yet, but we know that God has a plan for all of this.

UPDATES on Megan Babtista
This one came Monday @504pm
On Megs - well, she had a setback on Thursday. Wednesday night, we noticed that her left eye looked a little droopy, but we figured that she was just swollen and tired, so we put her to bed. Thursday morning, she woke up unable to smile, and by Thursday evening she couldn't close her eye or her mouth on that side. We took her to her scheduled appointment with the Ear, Nose and Throat specialist for the bleeding out of her ear (who, incidentally, was trained in neurology and worked at Johns Hopkins) He confirmed that the left side of her face is paralyzed, probably due to the bleeding on the brain, and is referring her to a doctor at Stanford. He pointed out that the sooner we get her an appointment there, the better, since the longer she goes without treatment, the more permanent the damage becomes. We have left messages for the doctor she was assigned, but we have not received the call as of yet. She is really different now - her personality has changed somewhat, and she is really bitter and angry about the accident. Tulare County Sheriff Department is charging the boat driver with criminal negligence and involuntary manslaughter. Megs has a neurology appointment tomorrow in Fresno, and my appointment with the Gastrointoligist (sic) to schedule surgery is Thursday. Please pray also that she'll eat - it has become a huge fight, and my mom is about ready to shatter. Sorry, not a very encouraging report, but her recovery is going to be really slow and hard, and it does help to have people praying specifically for these things. God has a plan for all of this, and I praise Him for having broken me through these things. Take care, Tam - it was great to see you while you were here.

Highlights from the weekend:
~ Ryan and I shared in celebrating the marriage of my friend Anna Cardwell to Hal DeLaRosby. I met Anna while in Nicaragua in January 2003. They will make their home in Waverly, about 1 ½ hours from us.
~ Ryan found 17 empty chocolate candy wrappers in the basement when we got home last night. Our dalmation had quite the meal while we were gone yesterday. Bad dog!
~ It took me way too long on Saturday but I gave the kitchen a very thorough cleaning. Ryan worked outside spraying weeds and in the basement all day.
~ Saturday night after the contemporary service, we joined the Rich/Cardo home for a jam session and fellowship time. Way relaxing and fun!
This caught my attention today:

Save me, O God, by your name;
vindicate me by your might.
Hear my prayer, O God;
listen to the words of my mouth.
Surely God is my help;
the Lord is the one who sustains me.
For he has delivered me from all my troubles,
Psalm 54:1,2,4,7a

Confused?
Okay, I know it may be confusing but I'm slowly adding my updates from my CA trip. So, bear with me. And don't forget to pray for Megan and the Sonksen family.
SATURDAY the 26th
After a late night, I woke up first thing and went out to visit Grandma Martinez. We chatted for a while and she gave me some tortillas she made me since she heard I was coming to town. While sitting there, I saw this “thing” that is music related (I can’t think of the name for it). She was using to hold letters in. I commented that I liked it since we have a room decorated in music stuff and before I left she gave it to me. I didn’t want to take it but she insisted. When I left, I stopped by Walmart and purchased her a new letter holder.
Yeah, river day! Us girls went floating. Of course it wasn’t that simple though. We started with meeting Nicole at her house @ 1pm. I met Tebbe (Kristine Johnston) at her house and we left to air up the rafts. We stopped at the gas station and Robert, the owner, said to meet him in the back and he’d help us. Well, I went to the back of the shop, grabbed the air tool, attached it to the compressor hose and aired up the rafts. Robert was kinda surprised that I knew what I was doing and so I reminded him that I grew up around that stuff. He chuckled. We then stopped at Taco Bell for a quick bite. Let me just remind everyone that I don’t even like Taco Bell. I ate it so much in high school that I wouldn’t go there anymore (except when I was starving in college and had no where else to go on campus). Since I hadn’t had Taco Bell for a few years, it actually sounded good. We rushed to Nicole’s as I ate in Kristine’s truck. We were a few minutes late and thinking that Baker would be ready to walk out the door. Duh, of course she wasn’t; she hadn’t even changed into her tanning suit yet. So, anyway, we finally made it to the river, parked Nicole’s car at Del Rey bridge and then headed for the top. Nicole decided to leave her car unlocked so that her windows wouldn’t get broke in case someone wanted to break in. Only in California! Anyway, we have a nice little float down the river. Not too cold, not too many people. As we were floating, the Workman’s came by on wave runners. [Let me explain all this: We were floating in the lower river where there is no public access for boats etc. When I lived back home, we would spend Sunday afternoons at the Workman’s riding waverunners and splashing all of our floater friends.] All three of us were nervous and just knew we would get soaked. We prepared for the worse: Kristine hid her face, Nicole tried to hide and I got to the outside since I’m the least recognizable. We waited and waited. Finally one guy came back passed us but our buddies never returned. As we floated a little farther (not too far from the bridge) I could hear an alarm going off. I jokingly asked Nicole if she had an alarm on her car and she said no. As we got in sight of the bridge, there was this guy standing looking up river towards us. He shouted out to us and informed us that someone had been up there breaking into vehicles and asked which one was ours. I was a little nervous that he might be the trouble maker and was on the look-out for his buddies. But, as we got out of the river and headed up to the road, we saw that multiple cars had been broke into. Everyone of them, except Nicole’s, had windows broken out. The guy shouting lives around the corner, heard the alarm sounding and headed over. He saw the guys in action, called the Sheriff, etc. The idiots were too stupid to steal Nicole’s cd player. Anyway, we waited for the Sheriffs, gave them the basic information and scurried off. They asked Nicole for her information and she didn’t have her license on her, but at least she has a license now :) She had taken her wallet out and left it in Tebbe’s truck. So, here we stand in front of two sheriffs, none of us with a license on us, and we walk off to the car to leave. A little unnerving!
We got back to the truck and Nicole went home. Kristine and I then stopped by the Workman’s to chat with them. They were quite surprised to see me. I then took Luke’s wave runner out for a short ride. AND, I was nice and didn’t splash any of those floating. Instead, I would slow down as I passed them. When I slowed down for one group, I recognized the guy in the raft. It was my cousin, Chris, and so we chatted for a bit. He was quite surprised to see me on the river, let alone California. Finally I headed back to the house, put the wave runner on the trailer, chatted for a bit longer and went home for a shower.
That night was my relax night. I made a quick run to Walmart, ate a frozen burrito and don’t remember much else.
SUNDAY the 27th
Ya know, I’m writing this some time after getting back home and today there is so much more emotion that comes with the memories of these events. But, my point here is to share about my trip to CA not the events that occurred just days later.
Back in the day, when I lived in Kingsburg, Sundays were always an important day. Time to gather together and worship the Lord, time to sit at the table with family for a meal, it was and still is the Lord’s day. The last two years of college, summer Sundays meant we were out at the river. We’d go out to the Workman’s place that sat just below the wier on the lower Kings River. There was no public access below the wier which kept much of the traffic out. So, as were most Sunday afternoons, I went out to the Workman’s to hang out and visit. We did just that. Sat on the lawn in the shade of some old oak trees, ate junk food and hung out. It was good for me to see old friends and learn what they’d been up to in the last two years. I rode wave runners again, only this time it wasn’t such smooth sailing. I must have got something caught that wouldn’t allow me to accelerate beyond 5 mph. I was several miles down river and at this point Shanna, for the first time, took the lead. So, here I am putzing along passing people who were floating down river feeling like an absolute idiot. Finally Shanna realized that the wave runner behind her was not me and came back. I told her what I thought was wrong and she took off to find her dad (the owner of these expensive toys). I continued slow-poking along trying to pretend like I was enjoying the scenery. Finally Ronnie showed up to help. I pulled over in an open area, we turned the thing over, couldn’t see anything, Ronnie then jumped on to try it out. Of course it went perfectly down the river. I felt like a huge idiot, must have been God knowing that I need some humility at the point in time cause it worked. Ronnie tried to make me feel better by telling me that these things happen easily. I’m just thankful that I didn’t break anything! So, I headed back to the house and didn’t play around anymore on the river. About 5pm, I decided to go back to Dad’s and hang out with him for the evening.
I got to his house and he was gone. When I called his cell phone, it clicked with me that he had one more night of the Dr. Jekyl & Mr. Hyde musical. Dad answered the phone and asked me again if I wanted to see the musical. I had at first said no, then the second time I wanted to go but didn’t have anyone to go with. All of a sudden, I need to rearrange my plans so that I could hang out with Dad on Monday night instead. So, I called Mike Fagundes to reschedule with him. With only a little coaxing, I talked Mike into coming down to the play. By this time it was 545pm and the play started at 7pm. I called Dad back and asked him to get us some tickets, jumped in the shower and rushed to get ready. Of course, if I was going to be in public, I wanted to make sure that I looked good :) By 630, Mike had showered, eaten a few hot dogs and driven to Selma. I, to no surprise, was not ready. A few minutes later, we walked out the door and I was carrying some homemade tortillas (thanks to Grandma) and tea. I stuffed my face as we drove to the theatre. It was sold out but thankfully Dad had already reserved the tickets for us.
We got inside the theatre and there were two empty seats next to us. They must have been running late since it was sold out. About 5 or 10 minutes into the musical, the couple walks into the now dark theatre. Much to my surprise it was Aaron Colby and his girlfriend. (Aaron is a childhood friend. He and my brother were buddies and I always referred to him as “my little boyfriend”. Even when he was half a foot taller than me and no longer little, he still had the same title. He’s always been a fun guy.) As he walked past me in the row, I smacked him half way on the rear and half way on the hip. Aaron’s eyes had yet to adjust to the dark and he had no clue who just smacked him. He looked at me and said “don’t hit me”. It was later in the play that he saw who was sitting next to him. Intermission came and we all got up for a quick break. First, we chatted with Aaron and laughed at the fact that he had no clue who was harassing him. As we all 4 walked out together, I saw Joe and Lisa Babtista. (Joe and Lisa are also good friends of mine. And Aaron grew up in church with them. Joe and Lisa’s daughter, Nikki, was in my wedding. The Babtistas are dear friends of mine. Mike went to elementary school with the Babtista kids and also knows their family. All that said, here’s the story:) I hugged the Babtistas and said hello. Joe, who has yet to meet Ryan, turns towards Mike and asks “so, is this the special one?” (or something real similar). I turned to Joe and said “no, this is Mike. He was special 6 years ago.” Joe was so embarrassed and I thought it was hilarious. Joe was just trying to be nice and introduce himself, thinking it was Ryan, since I didn’t bother to introduce them. But I didn’t feel the need to introduce him to Mike, someone he knew. But Joe didn’t recognize Mike, in fact, its been several years since he’d seen him and Mike no longer wears glasses. It was a good laugh for all of us.
We eventually sat back down and enjoyed the rest of the play/musical. After that we went to Denny’s for a late supper, since I was still HUNGRY! After Dad finished cleaning up some lighting and sound stuff, he met as Denny’s. During the time in between, I used that opportunity to ask Mike about his faith, where he is at and where he’s going. Following the food, we went back to the house and I continued to ask Mike questions. I just know that someday he’s going to call me and tell me that for the first time in his life he’s experiencing the true love of Christ and has a joy in his heart. In the meantime, I’ll continue to pray and hope that the Holy Spirit doesn’t wear out his knuckles knocking.
It was an interesting few hours. Although I dated Mike in the past, there’s no akwardness being around him. Praise God that in His time, he restored that friendship; one that I greatly value. Going to bed that night I missed Ryan so much more. I was so thankful that I have a husband who loves the Lord and desires to lead me in such a direction.
MONDAY the 28th
What a blessing Monday was. I got to hang out with my Nanny and little cousins, Taylor and Shannon Gilbreath. And for the first time since I’d left my house on the 18th, I had a home cooked meal. Yup, biscuits and gravy and bacon – good stuff! I hung out there all day playing with the girls and chit chatting with Nanny. She made lunch too; some more good stuff – fried potatoes and beans. Oh, how I love simple foods.
That night Dad and I planned on supper together. So, I went to his house and made an enchilada casserole. It turned out pretty good even though I forgot to use some sauce over the top. Well, Dad said he’d be home at 6pm and I was irritated when he wasn’t. Not much later I called his cell phone to see where he was. He was at the theatre cleaning up since he had left early the night before. About 7pm, Dad came in and not much later Jen called and chatted with him for a little bit. We ate dinner and chatted for a short period of time. He ended up helping me cut some roses to take to Dorothea.
About 930 that night, I showed up at the Fagundes house to visit with Jim and Dorothea. I wanted to surprise Dorothea and had been keeping tabs on them without them knowing it. Monday night was the only night I knew they’d be home. I stood outside and rang the doorbell. The boys (Jason and Mike) both knew I was coming so they made her answer the door. She was so surprised because she had no clue I was in town. It was lots of fun to visit with them. I tried to talk Jim into hunting deer out here instead of Montana but I don’t think I have him hooked yet. It was late and I knew they needed sleep so I went in the living room to harass Mike. Jim went on to bed and Dorothea came in there and we talked till 315 in the morning. I was so stinkin’ tired!!!!!!!! Another late night but well worth the time; it had been quite a while since I got to sit and visit with them.

URGENT PRAYER
Megan Babtista and Whitney Sonksen (both of Kingsburg) were in a boating accident on July 4th. Megan and Whitney were riding a wave runner when a boat came around the corner and collided with the girls. Whitney died later of multiple injuries. Megan has multiple skull fractures and is bleeding out her ears. I just found out this afternoon that Megan, although still bleeding, was scheduled to come home last night. Her doctors said that she's recovered 2 weeks worth in just 2 days. The doctors comment to the family was "you must have a lot of religious people praying for her". Everyone is amazed at Megan's recovery. Please join me in praying for Whitney's family and friends as they mourn her loss. For those who saw the accident happen. Pray for Megan as she will likely feel guilty (she was driving the wave runner) and question God. Lets also pray for ultimate healing in Megan and a testimony that reaches millions. Praise God that people have been sharing with Whitney's family about her sharing her testimony with others. Join me in praying for that testimony to continue as she leaves a legacy of loving the Lord.

02 July 2004

Where do I begin? It’s been a very long two weeks so I’ll just start at the beginning and share as much as time will allow:
FRIDAY the 18th
Ryan was gone for 2 days in Galena, Illinois at the Eagle Ridge Resort for work. We then joined up in Des Moines Friday night. Ryan was already relaxing at the hotel when I met up with him. It was so good to see my honey! He presented a gift to me and it has a wonderful story behind it. It's a lap harp. I don’t remember all the details of the story but I have to share it with you. It just creates a picture of how sweet and wonderful my husband truly is. Praise the Lord.

Several months back I joined Mom, Ralph and Dad on a trip to Galena when Dad was out visiting. While there, I saw this lap harp in a store. It was the neatest thing. You might have to check out the website to understand but you slide this card under the strings and the notes are placed right under the strings to pluck. It was the perfect cheat sheet for someone like me who has no musical talent. I thought it would be a great addition to our music room but didn’t want to spend the money on it. So instead I bought one for mom as a Mothers Day gift. Anyway, when Ryan was done with the conference on Friday, he went into town to find the lap harp for me. The only thing Ryan knew was that it was in a store in downtown Galena. When Ryan arrived just one store was open. So he walked around for an hour waiting. Then at 10am, he began his hunt. It was very much like a wild goose chase! One store sent him to another place who sent him to another place and on and on. Sick of getting the run around, Ryan tried calling my mom to find out where the store was but he didn’t have cell phone reception. Galena sits in a little valley area along the river with a very steep hillside on the other edge of town. So, he climbed up these long stairs to try to get reception. I’m not at all exaggerating; they must have taken him forever to walk up. The picture isn’t clear or I’d show you the proof. I’m way too lazy to ever walk up those stairs! He hiked up and still no reception so he headed back down to search some more. Finally he found the right place – it was the one that had been open at 9am. Ryan had taken cash so that he could buy the lap harp without me knowing and then give it to me for Christmas. Little did he know that it cost a pretty penny. So, he ended up having to use the credit card. And since I pay the bills and would see the purchase and question him on it, he decided to just give it to me early. There was lots of effort involved in his thoughtfulness! He’s so wonderful!!!!!!

Back to my travels, after relaxing for about ½ an hour in the hotel, we met Ryan’s folks, Eric (his brother) and Shelly (Eric’s wife) for dinner at Okoboji Grill. I had yet to meet Shelly and was both excited and apprehensive. Things went great, I think :) All six of us had a good time even though my salmon was not cooked! Its too bad that Eric and Shelly live in Bemidji, MN. It would be fun to get together with them on a regular basis. After supper we went our separate ways. Ryan and I stopped and had a shaved ice together after making a few purchases at Dollar General. Then we headed back to the hotel and I fell asleep as we watched Princess Diaries on TV.
SATURDAY the 19th
We started our day by having breakfast with my Mom, Ralph, Nanny and Aunt Janie. Nanny and Janie had flown into Des Moines airport to hang out with in beautiful NE Iowa for a week. Unfortunately I had already made plans to be in CA the same week. So, we swapped states. Fortunately, they flew into DM (which is farther than Cedar Rapids) so I got to see them briefly. From there, we headed to Prairie City. We were there to celebrate 60 years of marriage for Ryan’s Gramma and Grampa Buitenwerf. First things first – Gramma made her famous pressed chicken sandwiches. We had just eaten so I tasted the sandwich and snacked on a few chips. Everyone began to arrive. Unlike that of my own, the Buitenwerf’s are a small family. Gramma and Grampa Buitenwerf have two sons who each have two children. None of us grandkids have “kids”. Instead, we all have animals instead. *** Side note: I come from a big family with lots of cousins and love that. Seeing such a small family got my attention and helped me be a little more open to have “several” children. We’ll see what the Lord provides us with :) After everyone showed up and had a bite to eat, it was picture time (check us out here and here). We all took some very cute photos outside near the garden and in the front yard. I’m excited to see those when they come back. After pictures we went back in the house and snacked some more. Gram B is very good at feeding people. Then she took us out to the farm where she grew up, where her brother still resides. We mostly toured the 3 story 100+ year old barn. It was amazing and so neat to hear Gram B talk about milking the cows, putting up hay etc (pictures of this coming soon, I hope). Living history fascinates me; especially when it involves my family. We then headed back to the house and visited with family. There were a few gifts and cards to open which was really a blessing to watch. Grampa B was quite emotional (possibly related to his recent stroke 2 weeks prior). He was teary-eyed over the cards and gifts and it was really neat to see that he cares. After 60 years, he still cares. What a legacy he’s living for his family to see. At 6pm, we had dinner scheduled. It was a home cooked meal by a man who caters small parties in his home. The place was out in the country on a farm with lots of animals (peacocks, dogs, horses, etc), gorgeous flower gardens and other pretty things. It was a huge meal, very nicely planned. We had a nice salad, bowl of fruit, and bread. The main course was a nice cut of beef (I can’t remember what it was called. All I know is that I don’t eat much beef and it was good) with vegeta… wait, I can’t remember what all was on the plate. I just know I cleaned my plate because the food was excellent. We had Better-Than-Sex cake for dessert. Mom and Dad B (Ryan’s folks) provided the wine which I heard was superb. After supper, we toured the home which was filled with antiques and beautiful pieces of furniture, art etc. It was a grand evening and lots of fun to celebrate with everyone.
SUNDAY the 20th
Woke up, not that I slept the night before, and had breakfast. Toast with homemade strawberry jam. Oh so delicious. Everyone rushed around getting ready for church while I packed and got ready to head to the airport. I hugged the B’s and kissed my honey goodbye before heading off to Cedar Rapids. It was a long day – approximately 14 hours by time I got into my hotel. I was tired and sick of sitting all day. It felt so good to lie down and go to sleep. It was the best night of rest in some time.
MONDAY the 21st
The NOPHNRCSE conference begins. Those of us on National Council met at 7am to go over the business agenda and sort through some other basic items. I “worked” all day helping out with registration and other little tasks. During my lunch break, I wandered over to the mall and had fish and chips with a few of the members. We held the business meeting on Monday night. There was a good turnout of food and members :) We chose a site for the 2005 conference and dealt with several other business items. I led the ad hoc committee for the site ballot and left the meeting carrying the votes. BUT, I forgot the bios for the sessions I was scheduled to moderate. After chatting on the phone with Ryan and relaxing, I realized what I was missing. I knew that they cleaned the ballroom already but hoped I could dig through the trash for my bios. As I exited the elevator, I was embarrassed to see Chief Knight socializing and tried to cover my NRCS logo on my shirt with my hair as I rushed past. Praise the Lord, they hadn’t cleaned the ballroom and my bios were exactly where I left them! So, I rushed back past the Chief and headed to my room to work on my introductions of speakers. Another night of good sleep but the bed seemed so empty without Ryan there next to me.
TUESDAY the 22nd
A day packed with opening ceremonies, educational presentations and lots of sitting. We had opening ceremonies, messages from partners, panel discussions, concurrent training sessions and more. Tuesday night was the scholarship auction and social hour. More great food, I loved all the fruit they had there. We made ~$5400 in scholarship funds from the items that were donated by members and auctioned off. Needless to say, I donated my fair share to the cause and will save it for a Christmas gift.
WEDNESDAY the 23rd
We started the morning with a State Conservationist Breakfast. It was a great way for students who were there to solicit themselves for a job and network with others. Several students were Fresno State Bulldogs and pursuing engineering or agricultural degrees. One student is currently a USDA Multicultural Scholar. I made sure to introduce myself to her since I was in her shoes during my college days. It was a neat connection since I was a USDA scholar and have met someone else going through those same experiences. Wednesday was another full day with a conservation tour after lunch. I stayed back in the hotel during that for medical reasons (mostly because Eve at the apple from the tree).
Wednesday night I was free to do whatever I pleased. Yah! I had plans with the girls – Katie and Cori. Those two girls are my best college buddies and I love them dearly. Early that afternoon, Cori called and cancelled because of all the things going on with her. Katie and I missed our buddy but we had a good time together. We ate at Hard Rock Café and shopped in the mall next to the hotel. It was fun but I’d like some more of those days to catch up with my girls.
THURSDAY the 24th
Getting closer to the end. Amen, Amen, Amen. When I know I’m going home or finishing up, it always makes me eager to get through it and get home. Thursday had some good things on the agenda but I was enjoying learning from my new friends. At lunch time I went up to my room and packed my things. After lunch I met with some other NRCS staff and learned about conservation in other areas, met a few state cons and relaxed. Thursday night was the banquet where they handed out awards, had a comedian as the guest speaker and introduced new officers. They also announced where the next conference would be held. Louisiana, here we come! My brother, DJ, came to Sacramento to pick me up. He arrived early so I brought him into the banquet to hear the comedian. When it was over and the dance started, I said my adios’ and hit the road. DJ and I had an interesting chat on the way back to Fresno. I love my brother and try to be a good sister but I’m not sure what good I do. Anyway, we stopped at his girlfriend’s house so I could meet her. She seemed really sweet and I hope to get to know her better in the future. Then he took me to Dad’s house where we chatted for a bit and then I crashed.
FRIDAY the 25th
Ah crum, what did I do Friday. Oh yeah, first thing in the morning, I had an appointment with Dean Bartell, the dean of the College of Agriculture Sciences and Technology at Fresno State. The four years I was at Fresno State, I joked and chatted with Dean Bartell on numerous occasions. When he heard I was out in CA last December and didn’t visit him, I got scolded. It was a nice visit. Then I tried to find Dr. Nef, who was the Associate Dean and in charge of us scholars. After a little effort, I sat in his office and chatted a bit. Unfortunately, I didn’t get to see my friend Amy who works for Associated Students. I then wandered back to Selma, changed and ended up at the McCaron’s where Nicole Baker was babysitting / hanging out. We chatted and laid out in the pool for a while.
Friday night Nicole Baker, Susan Kredit, Paul Nyberg and I went to Red Lobster for dinner. The shrimp scampi was good but I make better. And I never have cared for lobster tail so I’m not sure why I tried that again :) We stopped at Starbucks where the carpool began and went in for a coffee. There I saw Stephanie Nyberg, a high school buddy of mine. Good times.

17 June 2004

My honey is gone for two days. Then we meet Friday in Des Moines for 2 days. Then I fly out to CA for 11 days. Quite the drama!
Management Courses

Course One -
An eagle was sitting on a tree resting, doing nothing. A Small rabbit saw the eagle and asked him, "Can I also sit like you and do nothing?" The eagle answered: "Sure, why not." So, the rabbit sat on the ground below the eagle, and rested. All of a sudden, a fox appeared, jumped on the rabbit and ate it.

Management Lesson -
To be sitting and doing nothing, you must be sitting very, very high up.

Course Two -
A turkey was chatting with a bull. "I would love to be able to get to the top of that tree, but I haven't got the energy." sighed the turkey. "Well, why don't you nibble on some of my droppings?" replied the bull. "They're packed with nutrients." The turkey pecked at a lump of dung, found it actually gave him enough strength to reach the lowest branch of the tree. The next day, after eating some more dung, he reached the second branch. Finally after a fourth night, he was proudly perched at the top of the tree. Soon he was promptly spotted by a farmer, who shot the turkey out of the tree.

Management Lesson -
Bull crap might get you to the top, but it won't keep you there.

Course Three -
A little bird was flying south for the winter. It was so cold the bird froze and fell to the ground in a large field. While it was lying there, a cow came by and dropped some dung on it. As the frozen bird lay there in the pile of cow dung, it began to realize how warm it was. The dung was actually thawing him out! He lay there all warm and happy, And soon began to sing for joy. A passing cat heard the bird singing and came to investigate. Following the sound, the cat discovered the bird under the pile of cow dung, and promptly dug him out and ate him.

Management Lesson -
(1) Not everyone who craps on you is your enemy.
(2) Not everyone who gets you out of crap is your friend.
(3) And when you're in deep crap, it's best to keep your mouth shut!

This ends your two-minute management course.

15 June 2004

I seriously can't keep up. I love to read and write but I just don't find or make the time to do so. It's been another fast-paced week. We spent the weekend in Prairie City and Des Moines for Ryan's 10 year class reunion. Friday night we stayed with Ryan's cousin, Tera, and her husband, Kevin. They live half way in between here and there. We had a great time visiting with them. Saturday morning we stopped at the outlet mall and took a little "break". Saturday we visited Ryan's Grandpa Roy who's been in the hospital recuperating from a stroke. We then went and enjoyed chatting with old classmates at the Iowa Cubs Clubhouse out in left field. Unfortunately there was no game going on. That night we stayed with Ryan's Grandma, went to church with her on Sunday and then went to the city park for lunch. It was a continuance of the reunion only this time it included families. We had a good time there too but I was ready to get home. This week has been a blur so far.

It's all quite a rush this week to come home and catch up and chores etc. Friday we head back to Des Moines for his grandparents 60th anniversary. Sort of a mini family reunion. I'm excited to meet Shelly, my sister-in-law, for the first time. And also to see the rest of the B's. Then Sunday I fly out to CA for a week of work and then home to make a quick short visit to the family and a few friends. I really wish I could get out there for longer and see more people but I'll miss my honey and will have to come back to work eventually.

I think that pretty well sums it up here. Adios

I really wish I could get out there for longer and see more people but I'll miss my honey and will have to come back to work eventually.

I think that pretty well sums it up here. Adios

Adios

Weekend
Oh my goodness, its already Monday. What a weekend. Saturday was a girls day out - mom and I shopped in some antique stores and other cutsie shops. We had lunch and later smoothies for dessert. Saturday night was Living Stone. Its a contemporary worship service being held by some of the college students home for the summer. That was fantastic. I miss contemporary worship and Cornerstone church in Ames. Sunday was lovely. Great message from Pastor Lee and fun times afterwards. Church was over and I had 7 little girls surrounding me. It was so fun. SOmeone asked when I was going to have my own. What's the point when I have 7 little girls climbing on me already! Then I held Caleb, he's 3.5 months old. He spit up on me - it started at my shoulder and went all the way down my shirt and my skirt. I was impressed! His mom, Renessa, was embarrassed. Potluck didn't start till noon so Ryan and I went and sat in the park for a while. That was nice, just hanging out with Ryan and no distractions. Potluck was good - of course I always like food :) Then we went home and I napped while Ryan watched the History channel. Yesterday was the 60 year anniversary of D-Day. What a neat history. Lots of men and women who deserve honor and appreciation. Now its back to the work week. I better get at it.

04 June 2004

Okay, I'm so ticked! I just updated my blog and it didn't post! Here's try #2 for a quick synopsis of the last few weeks:

- The rains came and floods followed. Tornado warnings and lots of rain ruined my night of cuddling on the couch. We're thankful though that the floods didn't directly affect our home. Lots of people in Clayton county (where I work) lost everything. All farmland near streams was flooded. Makes for some interesting photos.

- Ryan and I celebrated our 1 year anniversary. Not quite as planned though. Thanks to the flood waters, Ryan's plans to take me fishing were wiped away. We did go to dinner and then went home and watched a movie. Of course, I fell asleep half way through it.

- WE SOLD THE HORSE! Yes, Promise is gone. Its sad, I know, but a good decision to get rid of her. Now, we need something in the pasture to keep the grass down. We plan to get a beef cow and then have it processed and put in our freezer later on.

- Some friends of ours, the Cizewski's, just moved their family to Clermont. Andy and Erica have 4 little girls. All 6 are lots of fun and we're glad to have friends within 3 miles of our house!

- The state conservationist (the boss in Iowa) retired last week. Praise the Lord! I had been praying for this for a year and a half. Soils cons (which is me) are required to be mobile within the state. Ya know, move around. Well, that was fine and dandy till I met Ryan. Now, I'm staying here and am not willing to move. That is really bad and the state con would have eventually made me move or quit. So, I'm hoping and praying that I can keep my job here when the new person comes in. Pray for me, please.

I think thats about it. This better post this time!
I've updated my photo web page to include some recent flood photos. They're pictures from around the county. I hope to add some of our town on Monday. Check them out http://community.webshots.com/user/tam4buit

Oh and did I mention that during the tornado warning my husband was outside messing with the rain gutters. I thought he was in the bathroom the whole time. And when he came in and I told him about the tornado warning, he suggested that we head to the basement. HE WAS JUST OUTSIDE!
Rain, More Rain and FLOODS
I thought Friday night would be good to cuddle on the couch and listen to the rain and thunder while watching the sky light up with lightning. Things didn't quite work out that way. It did storm alright. But our evening included watching the weather on TV, preparing to go the the basement because of the tornado and then finally going to bed. We got 4.5 inches Friday night. We live up on the hill so the most damage we saw was some erosion going into the pasture. The pond is full though and the overflow pipe ran full the last two days. Town, which sits nestled along the Turkey River, is close to flooding. Mom and Ralph who moved here in the last few months now have lake front property. All the bottom land fields are flooded. Dikes didn't hold - the water broke over the top and has been rushing in. Lots of debris coming down the river. Gilbertson Park, on the East end of Elgin is completely flooded. All you can see is the tops of playground equipment and the picnic shelters.
Elkader, where I lived before I met Ryan, and where I continue to work is flooded. The Turkey River flood stage is 12.0' and I think its currently around 18.0' The basements of all the buildings along the River are flooded. This is a 1 in 500 year storm meaning we should only see a storm like this every 500 years. This area of NE Iowa saw similar storms in 1999 that wiped out several communities. Well, five years later, its happening again. Littleport, Elkport and Garber were all wiped out five years ago. Today, the only difference is the # of houses that were wiped out. When this last happened, most of the communities moved to higher ground. Some stayed and now they are trying to salvage their things once more.
From a conservation standpoint (since thats the field of work I'm in), fields are flooded, terraces have washed out and pond dikes didn't hold. As I drove to work this morning you can see trash and residues all in the fences where the water was rushing through and more than 3 feet deep. It will be an interesting few days/weeks as this gets all cleaned up. Hopefully it won't take long until roads are open again and travel can continue down some of the main roads around here.
In the meantime, today Ryan and I celebrate our 1 year anniversary. Our plans aren't going to quite work out with the weather. He planned on taking me fishing since I haven't been in so long. But since you can't tell the difference between the creeks and the fields and since they're forecasting more storms tonight, we'll have to appreciate other things. So a big yipee to a God who has sustained us and our relationship throughout the past year.

TGIF!
Friday has come. I've been waiting all week for this day. It's just been too much drama lately. Our mower decided not to start anymore so I borrowed mom's. Let me just say that 2 evenings of mowing and I'm still not finished. My body aches to prove how much work it is to use a regular mower instead of a rider mower.
My desk at work has just been piling up. The first 2 days of the week were kinda slow. But the last two days have been non-stop. For every one thing I get accomplished, 2 or 3 things get added to my desk. This morning I had to pick my formal trainings for the next year. Without any national courses, I came up with 16 training days. That's 3 weeks of work that I'll miss. That doesn't include regular training that the state puts on during the year up in my area. I'm learning to be a District Conservationist and PRAY that I don't get asked to move away if that's God's will for me.
Monday is DJ's birthday. Haven't purchased him a formal gift yet. Got any ideas. I do have several things for him though. I emailed him yesterday with the following message: Happy Birthday (a few days early bub). I have a gift for you, you just have to come get her. Young female. Great looking. Name is Promise. Come get her ASAP :) His other present I'll just have to send him a picture of. It's ditch weed. Yeah, years ago Iowa road ditches grew ditch weed to make rope in support of the war. Its quite a sight if you've not ever seen it growing massively before. I remember the first time I saw it when I was in Ames. Anyway, its growing out in our pasture and I haven't the chance yet to cut it down. Thought I'd take a picture of it for DJ to see, not for him to harvest for anyone!
That's about the excitement here. It's been storming here all day. A tornado just hit the ground aobut 90-100 miles west of here. That's exciting when you're not able to get into a basement and there could be a tornado rolling your direction. I love danger but not that much. The thunder, lightning and rain on the roof should make for a good night to cuddle on the couch and do nothing. I'm off...

Muy Importante!
My good friend Jayne is having surgery today at 3:15. She broke her elbow last week and surgery is today. They may have to replace her elbow socket. She's scared to death of needles so you can imagine how apprehensive she is about this surgery. Please lift her up in prayer for the surgery and over the next few weeks as she recovers. Muchas gracias!

Christian One-Liners

"Don't let your worries get the best of you, remember, Moses started out as a basket case"

Some people are kind, polite, and sweet-spirited - until you try to sit in their pews.

Many folks want to serve God, but only as advisers

The good Lord didn't create anything without a purpose, but mosquitoes come close.

Opportunity may knock once, but temptation bangs on your front door forever.

Quit griping about your church; if it was perfect, you couldn't belong.

If the church wants a better pastor, it only needs to pray for the one it has.

Peace starts with a smile.

We were called to be witnesses, not lawyers or judges

Be ye fishers of men. You catch them - He'll clean them.

Coincidence is when God chooses to remain anonymous.

God doesn't call the qualified, He qualifies the called.

God grades on the cross, not the curve.

God loves everyone, but probably prefers "fruits of the spirit" over "religious nuts!"

He who angers you, controls you!

If God is your co-pilot - swap seats!

Prayer: Don't give God instructions -- just report for duty!

The Will of God will never take you to where the Grace of God will not protect you.

We don't change the message, the message changes us.

The best mathematical equation I have ever seen: 1 cross + 3 nails = 4 given.

Much needed prayer:
1. Audra's blood platelet levels need to increase so she can get her chemo treatment.
2. Gale Bamford is doing better but tries to do too much. Still a serious condition (I think).
3. Amy's Grandpa was recently diagnosed with cancer. He doesn't know the Lord. Pray that through this, Grandpa might open his heart to the Holy Spirit.
4. Me, because my body aches (especially my back and neck).
5. Those friends who are getting married this summer (anna/hal, Shane/Michelle, dragonfly's sister, and many more). Pray that they continue to build their lives on the Rock of Christ.
6. Those friends who've recently decided to follow Christ into ministry. Ryan & Renessa who will be working with Athletes in Action. Carrie Moore who will be with STINT.

13 May 2004

1. What time is it? 7:40am

2. Nicknames: Tammy and Tam and Tammy Sue cover how most refer to me.

3. Birth Parents' names? Daniel Leon and Constance Sue

4. Number of candles that appeared on your last birthday cake? 24

5. Favorite animal: I don’t know that I have a favorite but I do like seeing baby calves. They’re so cute!

6. Tattoo? NO, you can’t erase them.

7. How much do you love your job or jobs? My 8-5 job is interesting. I work for the government. It’s great serving other people and I do that daily. What an opportunity to be a light in a dark world! My other full time job is more of a priority than working for NRCS. Being a wife is such a joy, I love it. Not always easy but definitely worth every second.

8. Birthplace? Fresno CA

9. Favorite vacation spot you have been to? I love camping and its so difficult to pick a favorite. One great time was camping with some friends and we took the horses along. Had a great time sitting around the camp fire and riding horses through the timber. A fun story from that trip is when Eddie (one of the “adults”) threatened to get back at me for pushing him over in the dirt. As soon as Eddie made his threat, Brian (a Cowboy buddy my age) spoke up and let me know that he would have Eddie roped before he could get to my tent. What fun! I have lots of fun stories and good memories to share about my travels.

10. Ever been to Africa? Ryan and I hope to go there sometime this next year. We’ll see where God leads us.

11. Stolen any traffic signs? Seems like I have a memory of picking one up out of the side of the road on Sierra Street in Kingsburg. Nicole Baker and I had been out rollerblading and saw it. So we planned to wait till dark and then go back and get it. A little daring since it was in a well lit and very busy road right off the freeway. I can’t remember if we ever got it or not. I know that I don’t have the sign if we did.

12. Ever been in a car accident? PTL, not as many as my friend Kristin Machado. But of course, I have to share the story with you all. I was on my way to this formal dinner party for work. All dressed up in my evening gown and headed down the road in Clovis. I was at a stoplight turning left. The guy behind me just didn’t stop in time and bumped my car. Of course he didn’t have insurance. But he barely hit me and did no damage so it wasn’t a big deal. Another time, leaving a funeral, I was backing out of a parking spot and trying to help my grandma put on her seatbelt. I backed into a big light pole and scuffed my bumper. Does that count for an accident?

13. Croutons or Bacon bits? Neither, I like olives 

14. 2-door or 4-door car? 4 door cheap Cavalier. It gets me from point A to B and it gets decent gas mileage, which is a good thing when gas is way up right now.

14b. (I thought I’d add a question) What does gas cost right now? Well, I live in the rural Midwest and its generally less than most places. $1.93 yesterday (5/12/04).

15. Coffee? Cofee is bad in my book. It stains your teeth, stunts your growth and goes right through my system. No thanks. Once in a while, Ryan and I will have a Starbucks Caramel Frap when we’re in Cedar Rapids.

16. Salad Dressing? A mixture of Zest Italian and Ranch. I think it’s the same as creamy Italian but I like to mix the two on my salads. I also like Ranch on my pizza and like to mix ranch and BBQ for fries and ranch and salsa on chips. Umm, good.

17. Favorite dessert? Fresh fruit. Definitely not chocolate!

18. Favorite Number? 4

19. Favorite movie? I LOVED Ace Ventura from junior high and most of high school. These days I think its stupid and really like the Band of Brothers series. I also really like girly movies though.

20. Favorite color? Red and blue – go bulldogs!

21. Favorite Holiday? I’d have to say Christmas. I love seeing others open gifts. And, it was when Ryan proposed to me.

22. Favorite Foods? Mexican food and yay, I can go to a great place just 12 miles from my house (which is rare and unheard of around here).

23. Favorite days of the week? Thursday means that I made it through Wed night with JV kids. And Fridays are always a plus. Pretty much any day that I don’t have to work is good.

24. Favorite TV Show(s)? JAG, Navy NCIS and CSI. All acronyms, they must be government related :)

25. Most recently read book/magazine? Handy Man magazine is great even for us ladies. I’m also reading a good book called Power of a Praying Wife

26. Perfume/Cologne? Oh yeah. For every day use, I have several items from Victoria’s Secret. Sundays or something special, I use Obsession.

28. When was your last hospital stay? Oh, last July when my horse about killed me. That’s another fun story that I’ll save for another time.

29. How many times did you fail your driver's test? I barely passed the first time.

30. Where do you see yourself in 10 Years? I’m not sure where God will lead us in the next 10 years. I would like to have visited several countries doing short term mission work. I would assume we’ll have 1 or 2 kids for grammy and papa to spoil. I’m counting on God for my future.

31. What do you do when you are bored? I haven’t been bored for quite a long time! I probably just stuff my face when I’m bored.

32. Furthermost place you sent this message? It’s the WORLD WIDE web.

33. Who will respond the fastest? Cori

34. Least likely to respond? Everyone, you all are slackers and never make comments on my web page!

35. Last Vacation? If you don’t count my trip to Cali to visit friends and family, I last went to South Dakota and saw Mt. Rushmore.

36. Next Vacation? Our 1 year anniversary. We’ve talked about several options. We want to go camping. We also have plans to use our free night stay at the Marriott, see a play and eat a fancy meal.

37. Last concert? Jennifer Knapp and a bunch of others in Visalia right after I graduated college.

38. First thing you would buy with a million dollars? Pay off the house, build a garage and purchase the ground around us that is up for sale.

39. What time is it now? 1253 but I haven’t been at my desk most of the time

07 May 2004

Life is busy for us all, I'm sure. It's FRIDAY again and I'm so happy because I thought it was Monday when I woke up this morning! The basics of my last week is that Dad was here and we had a great time hanging out with him. Got to take him to work one day, travel to a cute little town in Illinois one day and just spend some time sharing him with Ryan, Mom and Ralph. I'm so thankful that he spent the time and money to come see us. Praise God that we can do such things!

30 April 2004

Amen, its finally FRIDAY! There are two great reasons for this particular Friday: one is that Ryan is not on call this weekend (woohoo!) and the other is that Dad is coming Saturday and staying 6 days (woohoo again!).

Work has been crazy busy. I could have stayed there all night last night. Fortunately I had a tanning appointment that I had to leave for. I was tempted to go back to the office afterwards but decided to go home instead and see my honey. While he was grilling dinner, he sat and had a cigar. I finally got to bring plants outside, yah! Ryan was such a good sport and watered plants as I carried them out. We had a good time. He left for bible study and I cleaned the sitting room and downstairs bath. Still lots to clean before company comes.

26 April 2004

Let me introduce you to my precious little friend, Audra Koelewyn. She's the 2nd daughter of Kevin (my high school ag teacher) and Cathy Koelewyn. She's three, maybe four by now and as cute as a button.
Audra was diagnosed with a Pilocytic Astrocytoma brain tumor in the earlier part of 2003. It has been quite the experience for them this last year. In the midst of this trial, they have grown in their relationship with God. Not only that, but the family has a contagious faith which is so encouraging. Well, our dear Audra had surgery last year and has been going through the chemo process since. Praise the Lord, the tumor is shrinking and dying. Although she has a tumor in her brain stem, she functions "normally" which amazes the doctors. This is solely the grace of the Lord and the prayers of his children. God tells us to make our request known to Him. Well, my request is that Audra can continue to be a testimony of faith. And when she gets done with this chapter in her life that she continues to walk with the Lord in an intimate relationship. In Luke (I looked it up, here's the link), there is a story of 10 lepers who get healed. All go on their way except one who comes back to thank God. May Audra be that one. May her life be full of praise as she comes to the feet of the One who healed her.
A week from today (May 3rd), Audra will be having another MRI. Please be in prayer and petition for Audra as she goes through another test. Pray for the family as they entrust their little girl into the Hands of The Ultimate Healer.

I'm so thankful that I'm in His hands

23 April 2004

This morning I was reading Soul Journey online and I thought it was important enough to share. Check it out here. Ya know, we as believers are afraid to share our sins and failures with others. We should help keep our brothers and sisters accountable and instead we judge them. No wonder we have a hard time being vulnerable with friends and family! And for those of our dear friends who aren't walking with the Lord, I struggle with judging them rather than loving them as God would have me do. Its a fine line I know, but its so easy to be hypocritical of someone else's wrongs. And then there are those in leadership or in the public view that we think are perfect. We expect them to be perfect. And when they make a mistake and fall into sin, we practically crucify them. You think The Passion of Christ was brutal, consider how you treat others, the things you think about them and what goes through your mind. Are you any different than the soldiers who pounded the nails? Am I? No, I do that daily in my own heart. And God knows my heart so I'm not hiding anything from Him!

So, consider a few things today...
~ be transparent and vulnerable to others. Be HONEST.
~ Put down the hammer, quit crucifying others.
"It is written: 'As surely as I live,' says the Lord, 'every knee will bow before me; every tongue will confess to God.'" -- Romans 14:11

That "every" means both you and me. Don't wait till its too late!
Is there anybody out there. You all say that you love to get my updates but you don't comment on them. I feel like I'm writing to the wall, seriously.

20 April 2004

Okay, so I just changed my template not thinking that it would screw up my comments page and my links to other sites. Give me some time and I hope to have it all fixed by the end of the day today. Praise God for lunch hours to work on other things!
Just wanted to share a picture of my honey with you! Click here

*** Thanks to Cori, I know that you can't see my pictures. So, it will just have to be a link instead. Thanks Calvert!

16 April 2004

Dang, I just read Cori's new blog. How fun hers seems, check it out at http://badbadmissy.blogspot.com/ Reading Cori's reminds me of how neglected mine has been. I've been waiting to get some new pictures on my computer and do all at the same time. Unfortunately I didn't quite get it done this morning when I was working on it. As for the other 10 days or so, I've been hanging out with Kaleb, my 3 year old nephew. He was staying with mom and ralph for awhile. Good times. Lots going on with him, with Ryan and our home. Its always drama to some extent. Yeah, the other day my horse got out and was down at the neighbors. Promise was standing in their flower beds staring at the window because she could see herself in the reflection. She seemed to think it was another horse. So they call Ryan and bless his heart, he leaves work to go deal with her. But she wasn't gonna let him near her (she knows he hates her). After an hour she was back in the pasture, the fence was fixed and I had one upset husband. His words to me when he called were: "you have one month to get her off the property before I shoot her in the head!" Yeah, a bit much I thought. I coulda cried. Ryan then called back later and apologized - he's wonderful like that. He was just angry and embarrassed.

That's really been the extent of it at home. Ryan will be gone this weekend for Men's Retreat. They'll have fun playing with guns and being guys together. I'll be at a wedding and baby shower. Other than that, I'm gonna hang out with mom and do some shopping.

Work has been busy, I can't keep up. Plus I took on some extra duties as the Regional Rep. for a national organization. I spent 3 hours on that this AM. Lots to do initially. Apparently my predecessor didn't do jack! So, it's been fun.

Oh, and I've really missed the valley lately. I miss my friends and the spring blossoms and all the other cool stuff. Such is life though.
