dear snoopy, good question...as you know, babies communicate by crying and it can be extremely difficult to figure out their needs. By signing you are offering a way to communicate earlier than when the skills to verbally communicate have developed.
The key is to always say the word out loud with the sign, you would never want to promote silent communication with signs only. You are not stopping verbal communication or development, you are just providing an easier, earlier way to communicate. The verbal will develope later at the appropriate time.
I can ask my 14 month old if he would like some milk and he will sign "please." If he is finished eating he will sign "all-done" instead of throwing his food or a major fit. I have signed with all three of my children and never had negative side effects or "late-talkers."
T uses signs too. He uses more, full, all done and milk. We worked on please & thanks but now that he talks, he'll say more please and sign more. If you're not looking for it, you just think he uses is hands while he talks. We are also teaching E the same thing. It does seem to help the little ones communicate to us.
